About Me

Who I am:

I am a Cybersecurity administrator based in Toronto, Canada. I made a career change from the hospitality industry back in 2020 during the height of COVID, as I was working towards my red seal in cooking while living in Kelowna, BC. Building my own computers and servers drove my passion for IT.

Where I'm from:

I was born and raised in Mississauga, Ontario. I moved to Ottawa after high school for several years studying Computer Science at Carleton University and then pursuing Culinary at Algonquin College as a passion of mine. An opportunity came knocking to move to Kelowna, BC and I spent a couple years cooking there until the pandemic hit. I had a lot of time on my hands and decided to build my own PC, which then led to an interest of pursuing a career in IT. I am now situated in Toronto, Ontario working in the Cybersecurity field.

Plex Media Server

The main use of my home server was for a media server to replace all the streaming services I was signed up for. I started this project back when I built my home server in December 2021. I spent countless hours researching on Unraid and media servers. I ultimately decided on a Plex media server and opted to use the intel iGPU for the hardware transcoding. Soon after I setup Sonarr and Radarr to automate the management and downloading of TV Series and Movies. After a month of setting up my library and a short stint of using unmanic to convert files from a H264 to a H265/HEVC codec, I decided it would be more efficient to set rules to prefer files in H265/HEVC to save on storage. Once I purchased a domain and setup a reverse proxy on Cloudflare, I was ready to share the server with friends and family. Everything went smooth and I wanted to expand the library by having users send in requests to be able to watch the movies and shows they want. I found Overseer to manage media requests and added Requestrr as a way for users to send in a media request through Discord. This has been a great way to start my world in self hosting and had me thinking, what else can I host on my server?

Media Server Applications:
Plex - Media server
Sonarr - Tv Series automation and management
Radarr - Movies automation and management
Overseer - Manage media requests
Requestrr - Media request bot on Discord
Bazarr - Generate subtitles
Tautulli - Monitoring and tracking tool for Plex
